Why this matters
Competitions are the fastest way to build a record before you have a job.
A hackathon weekend produces something you built, under pressure, with other people, that can be shown and discussed. Very little else available to a student produces that in forty-eight hours.
They also do something a transcript cannot: they put you in a room with people already doing the work. A surprising share of first opportunities come from that room rather than from an application form.

What each involves9
Hackathons
Intensive build events, usually a weekend, ending in something demonstrable. The strongest short-format evidence available to most students.
Olympiads
Subject competitions with recognised standards and, at higher levels, standing that admissions tutors know how to read.
Innovation challenges
Open-ended problems set by organisations, judged on the quality of the idea and how well it was worked through.
Academic competitions
Discipline-specific contests — debating, mathematics, case analysis — that evidence depth in a named field.
Study tours
Structured itineraries built around a subject or sector, with sessions scheduled rather than time left loose.
University visits
Seeing a campus before committing to it. An hour on site usually settles questions a prospectus leaves open.
Leadership programs
Cohort programs focused on responsibility, decision-making and working through other people.
International camps
Residential programs combining instruction, project work and a cohort drawn from several countries.
Entrepreneurship competitions
Pitching and validating a real idea against judges, which forces the commercial questions early.
Common questions
Do I need to win for it to be worth it?
No. In interviews, what you built and the decisions you made carry further than the placing. Most people who found a competition valuable did not win it.
Do I need experience to enter?
Most hackathons and challenges welcome beginners and many run beginner tracks. Olympiads and some academic competitions have entry standards, which we will tell you before you commit.
Are there costs?
Many are free to enter. Study tours, camps and international events carry costs, which we set out in full — including travel and living — before anything is booked.
Can international students take part?
Usually, though entry rules and any prize arrangements can depend on residency or visa status. We check that against your position before you apply.
